Peter Mattei, one of the most acclaimed Don Giovannis of our time, stars in a new production by Tony Award–winning director Ivo van Hove
Since its 1787 premiere, Mozart’s immortal version of the Don Juan story – which follows its prodigal protagonist in his life of debauchery until he’s dragged to hell by the ghost of the man he murdered – has been a mainstay on the stages of every major opera house the world over. With its grim story yet utterly tuneful score and ingenious libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, the opera offers countless interpretive possibilities for any director prepared to take it on, and during the 2022-23 season, one of today’s most innovative theater makers left his own mark on this indelible masterpiece. In this stark yet evocative new production by Ivo van Hove, baritone Peter Mattei reprises his signature portrayal of the titular antihero, headlining a sterling ensemble that also features bass-baritone Adam Plachetka as his hapless sidekick and sopranos Federica Lombardi, Ana María Martínez, and Ying Fang as his unfortunate conquests. Tenor Ben Bliss and bass-baritones Alfred Walker and Alexander Tsymbalyuk complete the principal cast, with Nathalie Stutzmann making her Met debut on the podium.
