Sonya Yoncheva and Piotr Beczala star in David McVicar’s new production of Giordano’s FEDORA
One of opera’s ultimate diva showcases, Umberto Giordano’s FEDORA has all the hallmarks of a great verismo tragedy: In it, a Russian princess vows to avenge the murder of her betrothed, only to fall desperately in love with the man who killed him. It’s a tale packed with oversized emotions, fraught encounters, and unexpected plot twists, and one which relies heavily on the leading lady taking on its title role. In this production, soprano Sonya Yoncheva headlines the Metropolitan Opera’s first performance of the opera in 25 years, starring in a sumptuous new production by director David McVicar. Yoncheva shares the stage with tenor Piotr Beczala as the ardent Count Loris Ipanoff, with Marco Armiliato, a veteran of nearly 500 Met performances, conducting a cast that also features soprano Rosa Feola as Countess Olga and baritone Lucas Meachem as the French diplomat De Siriex.
“Opera at its most irresistible! An exciting evening … The Met orchestra delighted in some of Giordano’s most sumptuous writing … Nuanced, committed portrayals … Flamboyant charisma … roaring ovations.” (Observer)
“David McVicar’s handsome new production offered plenty of eye candy and kept the entertainment level high.” (The Wall Street Journal)
