In her Met debut, soprano Asmik Grigorian stars as Cio-Cio-San, opposite tenor Jonathan Tetelman, in Puccini’s timeless classic
Riveting dramatic soprano Asmik Grigorian made a major Met debut during the 2023–24 season, starring as the spurned geisha Cio-Cio-San at the heart of Puccini’s tragedy. Alongside her, the cast also features tenor Jonathan Tetelman as her callous American naval officer Pinkerton whose betrayal destroys her; mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong as her steadfast companion, Suzuki; and baritone Lucas Meachem as the American Consul Sharpless. Acclaimed maestro Xian Zhang makes her Met debut conducting Anthony Minghella’s vivid production.
“A fiercely intelligent and captivating singer... A remarkable debut.” - The New York Times
"Physically and vocally, Grigorian inhabits the part to a degree one does not often experience... Grigorian’s range of vocal colour and weight, equal to almost all the varied demands that Puccini makes of her, is the chief glory." - The Guardian
