Nadine Sierra and Benjamin Bernheim star in this production of Gounod’s take on the world’s most famous love story
In adapting Shakespeare’s immortal love story, Charles Gounod emphasized the passion of the lead couple over the Bard’s clever word games. To do so, he built his version of the story around four extended duets for the titular pair, as well as a handful of showpiece solos - offering ample opportunities for interpreters of the roles to shine. This is exactly what tenor Benjamin Bernheim and soprano Nadine Sierra do in this intoxicating production from the 2023-24 season. On the podium, Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the honeyed score, with a cast that also features mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey as the rabblerousing page Stéphano, tenor Frederick Ballentine and baritone Will Liverman as the archrivals Tybalt and Mercutio, and bass-baritone Alfred Walker as the pious Frère Laurent.
