Soprano Lise Davidsen stars as the Marschallin, alongside mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey as Octavian, and soprano Erin Morley as Sophie
A dream cast assembles for Strauss’s grand Viennese comedy, headed by one of today’s most exhilarating talents, Lise Davidsen. In this performance, the Norwegian soprano joins mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey as Octavian, the Marschallin’ s impetuous lover, and soprano Erin Morley as Sophie, the young heiress who comes between them. Bass Günther Groissböck is the lecherous Baron Ochs, Maestro Simone Young leads a buoyant account of Strauss’s beloved score, which incorporates Viennese waltzes, raucous comedy, and the composer’s characteristically vivid palette of orchestral color. Robert Carsen’s entertaining and insightful production updates the action from the mid-18th century to 1911, the year of the opera’s premiere, and was inspired by architects and designers of the Vienna Secession.
“Five stars for DER ROSENKAVALIER at the Met … Lise Davidsen unleashes opulent sound.” (Financial Times)
“NYT Critic’s Pick… the Marschallin is a woman of stature: influential, composed and well connected. Davidsen captures this naturally, exuding confidence…” (New York Times)
